Me vs. Stand Alone Servers

Thursday, July 21st, 2005

I am currently fighting a credit and license battle with MSAS (Mambo Stand Alone Server) due to the fact that they broke part of our license and also forgot or refused to put credit for us on their product. I had this same battle with Xoops Stand Alone Server when it first came out and i am sad to the fact that i have to be having it again with Mambo. To me, Credits is a big thing and a big word and i just would like to have the credit directed back.

3.3 is coming soon, making some bug fixes and also doing a few modifications to the Admin Panel before release while working on designing a full 30+ pages magazine, and also a website & streaming archive for a convention coming up next week. I am also doing all that while preparing for the youth week in our church this weekend, so yes, i have tons of things up my hand.

I am actually done with the magazine, just making a few improvements before printing it for sunday. You can view the digital version here. Note that this is my first time doing this, second actually but the first was making a underground student gazetta in my old school with MS Publisher :) This one was made with Photoshop 7 even though i have CS 2 at my disposal, a few things were taken out of it like that Layer Linking/Chain tool :( Still working on learning InDesign for the next release/issue.

3.3 should be released as soon as PHP 5.1 comes out stable, waiting for it so we can have a few more updates. After that, i will work on updating the PHP 4 plugin to PHP 4.4 which came out a few days ago.

Man, Apache 2.1 is also coming out and i think things are going to be hectic. I have the Resin 3 and Tomcat 5 plugin ready but i still have to make the installers and the manual installtion doc for it… I ought to share some of this weight with Michael :D
What else, thats all i can think off. Gotta go to sleep, tired… being staring at the computer screen for a week now while designing the magazine :(

Overview: Uniform Server 3.3

Monday, July 11th, 2005

With the success of the BetaChat LiveSession and also the release of Uniform Server 3.3 Beta 2 to the Beta Testers, it got me thinking that i had to do a overview of what has changed and also new things in Uniform Server 3.3

New Admin Panel: Admin Panel 2.0 has been fully finished and developed for release with version 3.3 It has new things included in it and also has some bug fixes since 3.2. The modified SECURE.PM file is also fully working and the new Admin Panel is located at http://localhost/apanel/ instead of the old http://localhost/a/. The Admin Panel is also multi-lingual and can be translated easily to other languages.
Plugin System Suitable: The new structure of the server seperates server based plugins from web based plugins. Web based plugins now use “/home/admin/www/plugins/” while server based plugins use “/plugins/”. This allows the server to be more safer and also prevents certain web based attacks.
New Start Page: 3.3 comes with a new start page on http://localhost/. Unlike the old start page that had the small info, we have a nice clean page with the logo in the middle.
/htpasswd/: A new root folder for .htpasswd files. Meaning everything is safe since the folder cannot be viewed or accessed via a web link. You can keep everything safe and nicely.
… finally: More hidden secrets you will have to find when it comes out…. :D

Those are all i can think of now, i will update when others come to mind.

BetaChat: LiveSession 1 Conclusion

Sunday, July 10th, 2005

Well its been 3 days since the BetaChat and i have been busy since then working on updating and doing some other stuffs. During the LiveSession Version 3.3 Beta 2 was released to the Beta Testers who made it or made it known that they where not going to be able to make it to the BetaChat. We were also able to fix about 5 bugs during the BetaChat and started some new things. The log has been uploaded to the Developer Forum for Beta Testers who could not make it and the download will be removed after a week. You can view the chat log, unedited, here. You can also download Uniform Server 3.3 Beta 2 here if you have the password. During the LiveSession we also decided some other things. About 7 people including myself and Michael made it to the BetaChat and we will like to thank those who made it.

A day after the BetaChat which was 2 days ago i started a new plugin/extension to Admin Panel 2.0 (included in Uniform Server 3.3 Beta 2.) The extention which can be downloaded from the Developer Forum allows you to migrate from one server or an older copy of the Uniform Server to the new installations. You can migrate from other WAMP packages such as XAMPP, Apache2Traid and so on with one easy click.

Uniform Server 3.3 is coming out very soon so watch out!
